Goal setting how-to

Well, it’s that time of year. Goals, Resolutions, reviews of the past year. It’s exciting, isn’t it? To get a fresh start into a new year.

This year, on December 31st I had time to sit and reflect on each of my goals from 2021. How did I do? What did I achieve? What did I drop?

  • I read 32 books total (goal was 40).
  • Posted one short story each week (for 4 months)
  • Partnered with a local sustainability magazine and submitted one article every month; they published 3 of my articles!
  • Connected with a former songwriter and recorded 6 of his original songs in the studio
  • Worked on a horse farm
  • Got a day job in finance
  • Started a book editing job (nights and weekends)

Of these listed above, I think of how many were goals (posted weekly story, submitted / pitched sustainability articles) and how many were “happy accidents”: Working with the horses, day job in finance, book editing, heading back to the recording studio, even having my pitches accepted and articles published!) Those were not goals of mine, because I didn’t even know that these various opportunities would appear.

We can hope and pray that a pitch will be accepted, but we won’t necessarily see it accepted and published so that was NOT a goal of mine…but pitching was.

All in all, it was an exciting year. I made some money, learned some new skills.

But, as 2022 rolls around, this got me thinking how do we set goals that we can accomplish?

So, if you’ve wondered that yourself, and are seeking success in this new year, keep reading.
